Synopsis

An adaptation of Mariama Ba's novel of the same name, published in 1979. The world of Ramatoulaye, a 50-year-old teacher, collapses when, after 25 years of marriage, her husband Modou decides to take a second wife — choosing his eldest daughter's best friend. The heroine's life turns into hell: financial troubles, a constant fight to keep her home, protecting her children's inheritance, and utter loneliness. The film tells how she manages to cope and carry on.
